Snowbird Gangsters

Did gangsters Al Capone and John Dillinger ever hang out in Palm Beach County?

Capone mostly hung out in Miami, but he was not particularly loved there, and a news report from 1930 places him in Palm Beach County, perhaps eyeing real estate; another says that a lawyer bought a Boca Raton tract for him.

He reportedly had an option on a fifty-six-acre island in the Hillsboro Canal, south of Boca Raton on the Broward County side. Long called “Capone Island,” it is now Deerfield Island Park. The state took it in 1934 when Capone went bankrupt. “Scarface” went to prison and then lived out his later years, racked with syphilis, at his home on ritzy Palm Island, near Miami. He died at age forty-eight in 1947.

Unlike Capone, who ruled Chicago’s underworld for years, Dillinger spent only fourteen months in the headlines, committing crimes mostly across the Midwest and West. He hit the road after a gang member killed a policeman in Chicago, and in late 1933 and early 1934, he was placed in the West Palm Beach area, where the gang reportedly rented a beach house.
